On meeting Dr. Belinda Aquino & Tom Coffman (of "The Making of Ninoy and the Rise of People Power") @ UHM today

I just erased three paragraphs, but here's more... ;)

To make a long story short, I am so happy to see this documentary and hope that people are inspired to learn more about Ninoy Aquino's work. His assasination is the last memory I have of being in my country, and in turn has left an lasting impression on me. If any of you would like to view this documentary, please email me and we will organize a viewing session for this very important documentary. The film itself is not that long, but gives a clear photograph of the country's political state and the positive impact this man made in the Philippines (and eventually to the whole world).

Tom Coffman was friendly and immediately greeted us upon arrival. He was eager to find out what led us to that room and I had some personal stories to share. Before we left, he gave us (Seph, Ruben Campos [who is an Anthropology graduate student writing his thesis on hip hop in Hawai'i]and I) each a copy of the film and exchanged email addresses. I really hope to keep in touch with him and get more involved. Tom was a journalist, independent researcher & historian, before he was a writer and producer. He was also a fomer political journalist and the bureau chief for the Honolulu Advertiser and Star Bulletin. He has written a number of books worth checking out as well.

I also had the pleasure of sitting with Dr. Belinda "Lindy" Aquino (no relation to Ninoy Aquino). She was very open and invited Seph and I to come talk to her at her office on any given afternoon. Needless to say, I took her up on it immediately. We sat for about 2 hours, just talking about our personal journeys. We spoke on many things and found that we shared some things in common, such as difficulty/length of time in acquiring U.S. citizenship. She is also a dear friend and patient of my previous boss (Dr. Jorge Camara), when I worked for Aloha Medical Mission on their benefit concert in the fall of 2009. She turned me on to some literary works that she thought I would be interested in, as well as some of her own books. It was also interesting to learn that Dr. Lindy Aquino was blacklisted and could not return to the Philippines.

I am so excited to be able to talk to someone about my experience, as it has come full circle with my gaining U.S. citizenship after over 25 years. This followed Cory Aquino's death a few months later and Ninoy's death anniversary was celebrated a year prior. For the first time, I had found what I had been missing all these years, and felt that pieces of me were suddenly coming together. I was the only one in that room who was actually there in the P.I. during Ninoy Aquino's assasination, but as a child who just 7-year old. I remember attending political demonstrations with my older sister. I also remember how unstable the country was during that time, although the people had finally begun to exercise their fight for freedom through the "People Power" demonstrations. I never realized how big of an impact those early years would make on my life.

I have been inspired by the life of Ninoy Aquino & his wife Cory, the first female president in the Philippines or Republika ng Pilipinas. If you are looking for some inspiration, there are tons on video clips on the Aquinos on youtube, and many books on this topic. Please feel free to email me if you would like to find out where you can get this documentary. Mahalo... Mabuhay!

Book Blog

Aloha SPACEmen... Just wanted to give you a shout. I hope that all of you are in good spirits, and if you are not, there's a great book entitled Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul by none other than Deepak Chopra. I know my homez Deepak has become increasingly popular in the past decade alone, but I think that his ideas really integrate modern science with eastern ideologies. This particular book breaks down the different types of fear, their characteristics and how they express themselves in dis-EASE, and how this ultimately affects our everyday life. (He says that anxiety for example, is multiplied fear.)

For those of you who like to use your own ability to heal your bodies, without synthetic drugs, you may want to check it. It really challenges one to really think for themselves, apart from our social conditioning. I have ready some of his books, but if you prefer reading in story form, his son Gautama Chopra wrote a book called Child of the Dawn, which some consider a parable. It is much like The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo, who by the way writes great books as well. Until next time...

4:00 School Blog

Huuuuuuuuurgh........ (Stretch) I'm at the campus center computer lab, just got done with studying. Been doing this since 10:30am and I still have so much to go. It's week three and I have just figured out my preferred study style for my one class (Anthropology 215). I'm listening to these people (who are working the computer desk) try to battle out their viewpoints, while trying to justify why they want to exercise their dominance. How annoying!!! Geeeeeeeeeeeez.

On a more interesting thought, I will be leaving this campus soon... To what? Not sure, but I know that I wanna take these dang glasses off, cause it's hurting my brain. My computer crashed. Glad that Dar was able to take the important stuff from it before it did so. Okay, still not interesting-- okay more arguing from the peanut gallery! Ahhhhhhhhhh I can't take it anymore. I gotta get outta here. Sorry, see you next time.

Green Blogging @ Ikaika's House

Wow, what a wonderful day it's been.

I woke up after a slightly symobolic dream. I was showing a song to a group of people. The radio was on top of a piece of board that was suspended from the ceiling, with thick chain. A man told me that they couldn't hear my voice on the song, so I easily climbed up. I was trying to turn up the volume on the vocals, but I couldn't hear it. The dream ended... Oh, earlier in the dream, I was in a filthy bathroom. I woke up and I had to pee really really bad, but my REAL bathroom is clean, actually. Anyhow, on with the day...

Darling and I got ready, and we decided to go to the Contemporary Museum in Makiki, and eat at the cafe up there. I was good... We started with an Illy latte, an Iced Black Tea and some Deviled Eggs. Then it was Soba Noodle Salad time. Oh, and we also had a cup of Roasted Garlic & Tomato Soup. Mmm... The waitress was a super rookie and had to go and get her notes to tell me about the specials. She forgot my iced water and later accidentally left us a bottle of 409. It was okay, I didn't want her to lose her job, so I put it on the floor. Then, I thought, "hey, maybe I DO want her job..." so I put it back on the table, but I decided that I didn't wanna be mean, so I hung it on the side of the table instead. ;) Still, the food took too long and people up on any hill can act posh. We went in to see what was going on inside the museum shop and came out with 2 mini journals, cute ones- and a cute flower card for Tita Lolita. Then we checked out the exhibit... It was aiiiiiiiiiight. The 2-D place was closed- again. Sh*t. It's my fave.

So, up there was the exciting part. Now this is the oooother exciting part. Bye... I'm gonna eat Ike's cookies now and use the massage thing while he & Seph play Street Fighter? :P Happy Day!

Inspiration from Sri Mata Amritanadamayi aka "AMMA"

Every so often, we will be touched by certain people that have a special light about them; people that carry a glow that makes us want to find out how we too can attain this special light. My own path has been blessed by teachers and friends that have helped fill me with what I feel is valuable knowledge. Reading books by Paulo Coehlo, Don Miguel Ruiz, Thich Naht Hahn, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, watching talks by the Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa and being fortunate enough to hear live lectures from some of them have given me the fuel to keep my own flame going, as well as the inner knowing that there is a divine presence. Through the teachings of these living examples, I also have the knowing that when I experience things that I cannot explain, that there are energies present; and that I can choose to tap into the energy that expands my heart and fill it to a level that will maintain its fullness. Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, also known as Amma, is an amazing woman who was born with a smile that can heal.

For the past 35 years, Amma has dedicated her life to the uplifting of suffering humanity through the simplest of gestures– an embrace. In this intimate manner, Amma had blessed and consoled more than 25 million people throughout the world. She has time and again emphasised that the duty of every human being is to realize his true Self, or in other words, "know who we really are." Amma does not favor any particular religion. When asked to which religion she belongs, she says, "my religion is love and service."

Amma believes that "Love is the foundation of a happy life. Knowingly or unknowingly we are forgetting this truth" she says. Amma, on several occasions, has said that it is important not only to feel love but also to express it. After all, love is our true nature. When we do not express love in our words and actions it is like honey hidden in a rock. She says, "It is of no use to anyone. This mutual sharing and expressing of love should begin at home between married couples and between parents and children. Only then will there be peace and harmony at home and in society."

"Everyone in the world should be able to sleep without fear, at least for one night. Everyone should be able to eat to his fill, at least for one day. There should be at least one day when hospitals see no one admitted due to violence. By doing selfless service for at least one day, everyone should help the poor and needy. It is Ammas prayer that at least this small dream be realised."

I hope that those of you reading this blog will find out more about Amma, see her as a living example of love and service, and gain inspiration from her humanitarian works, just as I have. You may find her on www.amma.org, www.amritapuri.org and www.myspace.com/ammachi.

Enjoy!
xoxo
